Modernist Church Saved from Demolition

Modernist Church Saved from Demolition

Historic Calvary Lutheran Church in Edina, MN narrowly escaped destruction in 2023.

Up for sale due to a dwindling congregation, in the summer of 2023 the Edina School District eyed the church to expand their campus. Thankfully, in the fall of 2023 it become the Emmaus Road Reformed Church. The architects of this 1970 Modernist sanctuary, library and music addition were Bergstedt Wahlberg Bergquist Associates of St. Paul, MN.

This was my home church growing up in Edina. I remember the interior chapel as a warm and welcoming place, in contrast to the chilly exterior photos below. My father oversaw every part of the building’s design. As a teenager, I have memories of visiting the construction site and poring over plans with my dad at our kitchen table. The stain glass drawing by Artist Mel Geary instilled awe and inspiration like nothing we’d seen before. Innovative and modern, the art glass soon became the signature of the church.

I’m so grateful this place of worship will live on to inspire future generations!
